HOD Biology Department

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE (SOS)

Department of Biology
Degree Option: B. Tech (Storage Tech)

Programme Philosophy

The main Philosophy of the Department of Biology is to train and encourage scientists in areas of Storage Technology, realising that training of scientists is the bedrock of technological development and national growth. The specific objectives of the Department include:

1.      Training of skilled manpower using model curriculum in Storage Technology.

2.      In the light of very keen competition by so many Universities for relatively few qualified candidates, the Department of Biology has structured courses for Storage Technology degree in order to:

(a)        take cognisance of the overall academic objectives of the Federal University of Technology, Akure which is a result and mission oriented education to meet the technological needs of the country.

(b)        ensure the high quality and marketability of our students.

(c)        pursue the main goal of minimising post-harvest losses in the Agricultural sector and post-production losses in the Industrial sector of the nation’s economy.

3.       B.Tech Biology (Storage Technology) programme has been designed to qualify graduates for rewarding careers in Food and Beverage Industries, Timber and Leather Industries, Breweries, Higher Education, Business and Commerce. This enables the graduates to:

           (a)   Supervise and maintain the keeping quality of raw or processed products
                   for use in Industries.
          (b)
Work as Consultant in charge of controlling Household and Stored
                  Products pests.
          (c)
Undertake research in specialised areas of Storage Technology.
          (d)
Handle general supervisory functions in the Export and Import business.
          (e)
Establish small scale Stored Products Factories e.g. Food, Wood, etc.

4        The effective storage of raw and processed food and non-food products requires pest management strategies. In view of the menace of pest activities to structures and preserved products such as food, wood and leather products, the pest control section of the Programme is being strengthened so as make meaningful contribution to the eradication of noxious organisms in the area of food and non-food products preservation.  The Department offers consultancy services in the area of pest control services at both household and large-scale/industrial levels
