UNIVERSITY LIBRARY The University Library was established primarily to serve the academic and general reading purposes of the staff and students of the University. It was established in 1982, the same year that the University started its academic programmes. However in March 1983, the Library first opened its doors to the University Community with a modest collection of books numbering 5,000 volumes. The remarkable increase in students intake with a corresponding increase in the number of staff has simply suggested the need for expansion of the University Library to accommodate all categories of users and increase in the collections. In realization of these urgent but pressing needs, a new Library Complex was constructed and this has become the new University Library. The two-storey complex houses the office of the University Librarian, the offices of other staff, the Work Room, the Circulation lobby and the Porters’ Section. Other service which units are also housed there are Reference, Serials, Audio-Visuals, ICT and Bindery. At Present, the Library has about 70,000 volumes of text-books and subscribes to a number of foreign and local journal titles. It is also a depository for FAO and other government publications. Students projects, theses and dissertation are also deposited in the Library. To bring out services closer to users, Faculties (schools) libraries have been established in the six faculties (schools) of the University with relevant materials in stock. MEMBERSHIP Membership of the University Library is free and open to all students, academic, senior and technical staff and all categories of junior staff undertaking training courses with special permission of the University Librarian. Others, including outsiders who have genuine reasons to use the collections can only do so with special permission on application to, and approval of the University Librarian. Every reader must register formally with the University Library and renew the membership at the beginning of each succeeding academic session. Admittance to use the Library facilities depends strictly on the production of evidence of being currently registered and on the use of the tokens by the students. All registered readers must normally carry their identity cards with them each time they wish to use the Library, and they must be prepared to produce the cards on demand by any library staff.
