The
Students' Affairs Office is
an integral arm of the office of the Vice-Chancellor which coordinates all
matters relating to students' welfare within the University system. The Division
is responsible for the general welfare of students and covers all Committees
and Boards relating to students' matters. The Division is headed by the Dean
of Students, who is a Professor and is assisted by the Students' Affairs Officer.
The Head of Division is directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor in the
day-to-day administration of the Division. Apart from liaising with the Students'
Union on relevant matters, the Division is charged with encouraging the formation
of Students' organizations, clubs and societies in the University. The Division
aims at promoting other extra-curricula activities including sports and recreation
in the University.
STUDENTS' WELFARE
The Division carries out its welfare duties through the different sub- units
under its umbrella:
1. Central Administration
2. Guidance and Counseling Unit
3. Halls of Residence/Documentation Unit
4. Students Welfare and General Matters
5. Off-Campus Housing Bureau
These welfare responsibilities are carried out under the guidance
of the Students' Welfare Board, while sporting activities are organized
and closely monitored by the University Sports
Council.
1.
Guidance and Counselling Unit
The University established a Guidance and Counselling Unit at the commencement
of the 1990/91 academic session. The Unit which is now fully operational,
provides guidance and counselling to both students and staff population. The
Unit also renders the following services:
a. Students' Guidance and Counselling.
b. Preparation of hand-outs on issues relating to counselling.
c. Liaison with the Schools and the Health Services Division on specific references.
d. Liaison with Hall Wardens/Hall Masters on specific references.
e. Liaison with the Industrial Training Unit on advice to students on career
prospects.

Students' Accommodation
It is not mandatory for students to live in the Halls of residence. On-campus
students are expected to abide by the rules and regulations governing the
Halls of Residence. Presently, there are 1,456 bed spaces in the Halls of
Residence. Allocation of bed spaces is made in order of priority approved
by the Students' Welfare Board as follows:
a. Freshmen and women
b. Final Year Students
c. Sports men and women
d. Students with physical disabilities
e. FUTASU Executive
f. Foreign students
g. University Scholars
h. Others.
Students
who are unable to get accommodation on campus always have the option of being
assisted through the Off-Campus Housing Bureau. In spite of this, each student
is assigned to a Hall of Residence as a member. Both residential and non-residential
students enjoy common recreational and social facilities

Off-Campus Housing Bureau
This Unit assists students who cannot secure accommodation on-campus. It liaises
with Landlords and Estate Agents and arrange off-campus accommodation for
such students, However, such accommodation is expected to meet a basic standard
in line with the relevant guidelines of the Students' Welfare Board.

Halls of Residence/Documentation Unit
The Unit is charged with the responsibilities of assisting the Students' Affairs
Officer in:
i. issuance of letters of identification for students.
ii. arrangement for Bursary and Scholarship awards and tests.
iii. mobilization of all graduating students for National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) Scheme.
iv. administration of Halls of Residence.
5.
Students' Welfare and General Matters
This Unit handles the registration of Clubs and Societies as well as the production
of Students' Identity Cards. The Unit also assists students with general welfare
matters.

Vacation Accommodation
Each accommodated student must vacate his/her room at the end of each semester,
and submit to the Hall Porters the University property given to himlher at
registration. Vacation accommodation in the University Halls of Residence
is only available with due permission of the Dean, Students' Affairs on payment
of the appropriate accommodation charges. Such charges are revisable from
time to time.
7.
Catering Service
In line with the Federal Government directive, the University no longer runs
a cafeteria for feeding students. Against this background, students are encouraged
to cook in the appropriate designated kitchenettes located in the Halls of
Residence. There are also "bukateria" in and outside the second
gate of the campus. These cafetariats provide an opportunity for a choice
of a wide variety of dishes on "a la carte" basis.. Staff and students
alike often patronize these eating houses. There are butteries at all the
Students' Halls of Residence and the Students Union Secretariat. A mini-supermarket
is also available on campus which gives students the opportunity to meet various
daily needs.

Students' Union
The membership of the Students' 'Union is voluntary and is open to all matriculated
students of the University on payment of the three hundred Naira (N300.00)
membership fee payable to the Treasurer of the Students' Union or any other
appropriate Students' Union Executive member. In addition, three hundred and
fifty Naira (N350.00) is paid as Hall dues.
9.
Sports Unit
The Sports Unit is charged with training and coaching
students in the various aspects of sports. To this end, the University sets
aside every Wednesday afternoon as lecture free to enable students engage
in various sporting activities. However, students are free apart from Wednesday
afternoon, to train at other convenient times.
The University Sports Council (a Committee of Senate) is charged with directing
sporting activities in the University

Postal Telecommunication Services
The University places considerable importance on postal services. Hence, in
1990, the University established a postal agency on campus to serve the community.
The Postal Agency is located within Jeremiah Useni Utility Building at Obanla
Campus. Telephone services are also available at Obakekere (Phone booth) and
J.T. Useni Building, Obanla campuses respectively.

Banking Facilities
In 1990, Wema Bank PIc. Nigeria, Akure opened a branch in the University.
With the banking facilities on campus, students are able to have accounts
and transact other financial businesses.
12.
Students' Welfare Fund Scheme
During the 1989/90 academic session, Late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, in fulfillment
of his promise to assist indigent students in the University, presented a
cheque of fifty thousand Naira only (N50,000.00) to the University. This fund
is meant to be disbursed to students in the University using the Senate approved
guidelines every session as deemed fit. As "seed money", it-is expected
that other well meaning individuals would' contribute to the fund. The money
is administered by Students' Welfare Fund Committee.
