Vice Chancellor's Welcome Message

It is with delight that I welcome you to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), a top-ranking University of Technology in Nigeria and indeed the nation’s technological pride.  Established in 1981, the University has grown tremendously, stretching its academic disciplines and research across six different Schools and thirty academic departments.  FUTA is located in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, Nigeria, and its vision and mission are not only clearly stated, but very vigorously pursued. Ondo State lies between latitude 5o45” and 8o15” North and longitudes 4o30” and 6o East.  It is an agrarian state and it is one of the major “Food Baskets” of the Nation.  The State is fast becoming an industrial giant with bitumen, oil resources and other valuable natural resources including vast but rich forest reserves for sustainable industrial and economic development. The University prides itself in top quality teaching staff, robust support facilities and libraries, and it flourishes on the serenity of the environment.    Academic programmes and curricula run in line with the University’s mission and vision, and in concurrence with its motto: “Technology for Self-Reliance”.

Thus, emphasis is placed on practicals and demonstrations as suitable complements to the classroom theories, thereby having a broad-based utilitarian education. It is quite remarkable that FUTA is one of the most peaceful universities in the country.  It was rated as the Best University of Technology by the National Universities Commission (NUC) Nigeria in 2004 and has remained so since.  Both staff and students are organized into harmonious and functional groups, unions and associations, each making strenuous efforts toward the ultimate successful attainment of the mandate and objectives of the University.
The University, being science and technology-focused, enjoys some peculiarities and uniqueness, marking it out more positively among others.  It runs full-fledged undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Mining Engineering (being the first university in Nigeria to do so); and Meteorology (being the only university in the sub-region undertaking such programme).   The University has obtained necessary approval to commence degree programmes in Project Management Technology and Transportation Management Technology from 2007/2008 academic session.  In a similar vein, efforts are in the top gear to commence degree programmes in Petroleum Engineering, Surveying and Geo-Informatics.  Also, all necessary machineries have been set in motion for the establishment of a School of Medical Science and Technology.
The University enjoys some local and international support in form of grants, linkages and collaborations and none of its academic programmes has denied accreditation by the supervising agency of Government - National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria.  Indeed, over 75% of its programmes have full accreditation.
The Federal University of Technology, Akure is a place to visit, with beautiful lawns, the hospitability of the staff and students, as well as its closeness to the famous Ikogosi Warm Springs, Olumirin water fall Erin-Ijesa, Idanre Hills and many other tourist centres including the Deji’s Palace (Ancient Antiquities) right here in Akure.  Making a choice of FUTA for career, visit or academic programme is a promising investment, one the investor will never regret!
You are therefore, most delightfully welcome.

Signed
