In achieving the national goals and objectives of
industrialisation and self-reliance, engineering education
in Nigeria, according to the NUC Minimum academic
standard, guidelines, should be geared towards:
i. The development of a thorough practice in training
ii. Early broad-based training in general engineering
and technology
iii. Practical application of engineering, technology
and manufacturing processes, and
iv. Close association of the programme with industries
in the country.
Graduates of the engineering programmes should
have acquired high academic standards with adequate
practical background, to be of immediate value to industry
and the nation in general.
Civil Engineering is devoted to the improvement of
the human environment for the purpose of making our
activities productive, safe and enjoyable, and providing
aesthetically pleasing surroundings. Civil engineering
is involved in the planning, design, construction and
operation of physical facilities essential to modern life
and community living. These include urban development
projects, housing, land, water and air transportation
facilities, water supply systems, waste treatment
systems, reservoirs and flood control dams, large recreational
facilities, and many others. The scope of studies
is so wide that each special area of civil engineering can
even be developed as separate programmes of study,
such as structural engineering, water resources engineering,
environmental engineering, construction engineering,
etc.
The programme is structured in such a way that students
will have opportunity to take courses that will
provide a basic understanding of all areas of civil engineering
practice, while they can concentrate in any of
the following options in the final year.
a. Structural engineering
b. Geotechnical Engineering
c. Transportation planning and highway engineering
d. Water resources and environment engineering.
The B.Eng. programme is aimed at developing the
students to be able to use their accumulated technical
knowledge, sense of analysis, and creative design abilities,
in various ways that can contribute to the development
of a more satisfying life and environment for the
country and for all mankind.
A graduate of the
programme can be counted upon as a leader, both in
creativity and adaptability, in the planning, design,
evaluation and analysis of technological innovation for
improving the quality environment, and of life generally,
in response to the ever changing goals and needs
of the Nigerian society.
