Man has learnt to use the earth’s resources for centuries. The extraction of minerals in Nigeria has been going on for decades. However, the study of the science of mining engineering
in any Nigerian University only started with establishment of The Federal University of Technology, Akure, in 1982. The porgramme was established to provide suitable personnel for the minerals industry, an industry that must grow to be of vital importance in national development. The minerals industry can serve as the vehicle for the rapid transformation of the Nigerian economy. A graduate of the Department should be able to provide and supervise labour in prospecting, mining and mineral processing, marketing of mining equipment, consulting, teaching and research, e.t.c.
