Philosophy
- To train and encourage scientists in areas of exploration for hydrocarbon, minerals, and ores, environmental and engineering investigations.
- Training of skilled manpower using model curriculum in Applied Geophysics.
- To meet the technological needs of the country through a result and mission-oriented education taking cognizance of the overall academic objectives of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
- Ensure the high quality and marketability of our students.
- Pursue the main goal of minimizing losses occassioned by wildcat drilling and mining for minerals and ores and also ensure continuous monitoring of environment to minimize hazards and to minimize failures of monumental man-made structures through quantitative evaluation of foundation soils.
The B.Tech in Applied Geophysics programme has been uniquely designed to qualify graduates for rewarding careers in Oil & Gas exploration and Production industries, mining, civil engineering, minerals and gemstone industries, business and commerce. This enables the graduates to:
- undertake fieldwork relationg to geophysical survey for raw data acquisition, processing and interpretation for minerals, oil and gas, groundwater, environmental impact studies and engineering site investigation;
- work as consultants in exploration and processing of data and recommending sites for drilling;
- undertake research in specialized areas of Applied Geophysics;
- handle general supervisory functions / roles in the exploration industry;
and
- establish small scale exploration firms thereby reducing dependence on government white-collar jobs.
Objectives
Generally, the objectives of the programme are to:
- Provide a mission-oriented and consultancy services with focus in and around Ondo State and other catchment states (as is the case of bitumen/tar sand deposits) in particular and Nigeria in general.
- Bring together the ingredients necessary for a well-paid career in geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation and instrumentation, as is required in the mineral/oil industry and engineering/groundwater-related areas of the national economy.
However, it is specifically meant to:
- Impact basic and fundamental knowledge in all areas of Applied Geophysics.
- Provide the necessary training and exposure in all aspects of Applied Geophysics that is in the fore-front of development (e.g. Oil & Gas Exploration, Water, Borehole, Airborne, Environmental Pollution, Dam site investigation, Road construction and Civil Engineering needs).
- Provide opportunity for a better appreciation of fields with the use of integrated Applied Geophysics at maximizing growth and technoological development in all aspects of explorations and its related fields such as Geology, Mining and Information Science.
- Develop the necessary manpower needed for industrial, technological, research and academic development of the country in all aspects of Applied Geophysics.
- Provide effective teaching, research and practical-oriented / field work programme that is required in all the field of Applied Geophysics.
- Offer the opportunities for the full development of Applied Geophysics to meet the ever growing challenges as is applicable in the industry, private sector and government services, for the overall growth and development of the country and mankind in general.
