Objectives and Philosophy
In consonance with the cardinal objective of the University to produce technology-oriented manpower for the country, one of the principal aims of the Department of Applied Geology is to train students to acquire basic knowledge of the earth sciences as in the convectional universities and in addition, to equip them with the geological techniques and skills required for exploration and utilisation of water, rocks and minerals which are necessary ingredients for national socio-economic development and improvement of quality of life of citizens. At the end of their training, these students are qualified to practise in a professional capacity as Applied Geologists especially in any of the following sectors of the national economy in which geological knowledge can be applied to solve human problems or harness earth resources:-
(i) geological and geotechnical services
(ii) rock and mineral industry
(iii) water industry, road and building construction industry
(iv) oil, oil-related and bitumen industry.
Another important objective of this Department is to carry out meaningful research designed to solve geological problems of direct relevance to the society especially in its immediate environment. As part of its strategy to achieve its aims and objectives, the department has endeavoured to establish a very strong link with relevant government agencies and industries in the private sector engaged in the practice of earth sciences. |
