Brief History on the School

Dean SOSThe School of Sciences took off as the School of Pure and Applied Sciences at the inception of the University with five (5) Departments, namely:
  1. Biochemistry
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Industrial Mathematics and Computer Science
  5. Physics

The General Studies Unit was also located in the School to provide programmes in English, Humanities, Social and Management Sciences to complement the more specialized programmes in Science and Technology. The first Dean of the school was late Prof. Olofinboba(1982/83) while Prof. M.O. Williams became Dean in 1983/84 session. Other past substantive Deans include Prof. L.B. Kolawole (May1989-July 1992), late Prof. S.A. Fashuyi Aug. (1992-1996) Prof. A.A. Oshodi (Aug. 1996-July 2000) and Prof. F.C. Adetuyi Aug. 2000 – Aug. 2004).

The school became School of Sciences in 1988/89 session with additional three Departments(Depts of Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Meteorology) from the defunct School of Earth and Mineral Sciences. However, when a new School of Mines and Earth Sciences came on stream in 2002, three departments left

the School of Sciences for the new School. Thus, the School presently has the following eight departments:
  1. Biochemistry (BCH)
  2. Biology (BIO)
  3. Chemistry (CHE)
  4. Computer Science (CSC)
  5. General Studies (GNS)
  6. Mathematical Sciences (MTS)
  7. Microbiology (MCB) and
  8. Physics (PHY)
