FUTA Don Gets International Academy of Astronautics Appointment.

An erudite professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems in the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA Professor Joseph Akinyede has been appointed as a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) Technical Study Group 6.  The study group will work on ‘Multicultural Foundations and Influences of Human Space Exploration’.  The report of the study group will assist the France based Academy in policy, standards and procedure formulations that could be used in future International Space Exploration and activities. In the letter of appointment signed by Jean Michel Contant, IAA Secretary General, Akinyede, who is one Africa’s leading expert in space technology, will actively participate in the study through attendance of meeting and regular correspondence with members under the auspices of the IAA Commission 6 on Space and Society. FUTA is the second Institution member after University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, to be admitted into the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) in Africa.        

In a congratulatory message, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape lauded Akinyede, who had previously served as Director of FUTA’s Centre for Space Research and Applications, describing the appointment as a commendable feat.  He said FUTA Scholars are always setting the pace for the country in intellectual discourse, cutting edge research and technological advancement.
