DEPARTMENT OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS,
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE.
REPORT ON THE 1ST DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR HELD ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 2012.
The Department of Remote Sensing and Geoscience Information System (GIS) organized its first Departmental seminar on Wednesday, 4th April, 2012. The Dean of the School, Prof. D.O. Adefolalu, in his opening remark, commended the department for staging the first departmental seminar in the last two years of his Deanship. He encouraged the department to keep the flag flying.
The topic of the Seminar was Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Geosciences presented by Mr. A.A. Komolafe, an academic staff of the Department. The presenter used the medium to remind, inform, educate and enlighten the audience on the relevance of Remote Sensing and GIS as efficient research tools in specific areas of Geosciences which include Geological mapping, Mineral exploration, Engineering & Environmental studies, Petroleum exploration, Groundwater exploration, Oceanography, Meteorology and Disaster management to mention a few. He concluded the discussion by reawakening the need for all Geosciences professionals to acquaint themselves with these technologies in order to key into the current trend in the Geosciences world.
Emanating from the seminar was the fact that the audience was better informed about the wide applications of Remote Sensing and GIS to their respective fields of study. For example, the Acting Head of Department of Applied Geophysics, Dr. (Mrs.) M.T. Olowookere, submitted that the Department of Remote Sensing & GIS would be consulted for expertise in the interpretation of imageries in the future editions of the AAPG/IBA Competition in order to improve on the University’s current performance.
Other attendees included Prof. J.S. Ojo, Dr. Y.A. Asiwaju-Bello (Ag. H.O.D., Marine Science & Technology), Dr. S.A. Opeloye (Ag. H.O.D., Applied Geology), Staff and students of the School.
