The main goal of the programme is to build capacity in climate science, applications and risk management aimed at solving climate-related socio-economics challenges in Africa. The programme is geared towards producing professional personnel equipped with the research and technology skills to manage climate-related issues in priority areas such as health, water, energy, agriculture (food security) and disaster risk reduction.
DRP-WACS has successfuly trained and empowered individuals across West Africa who are now consultants to organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), World Bank (WB) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
The Specific Objectives of the center are to :
- Produce high-quality research products and innovative solutions to challenges posed by West Africa weather and climate systems
- Train competent weather and climate scientists capable of providing viable solutions to weather and climate-related,problems in agriculture, water resources and allied sectors for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production, food security and sustainable environment in West African
- Develop new and useful tools for the socio-economic needs of West African countries (e.g for the prediction of onset and cessation, daily and monthly amount of rainfall)
- Develop climate hazard and vulnerability maps for climate change adaptation and water resources management systems for the sub-region
