The WASCAL DRP-WACS FUTA is engaged and have recorded huge success in series of activities amongst which are; capacity building programmes, local and international research projects and other Cooperate Social Responsibilities (CSR) to the University and its environs.

Capacity Building (Training and Research) at the DRP WACS

In line with its mandate on capacity building through training and research, DRP-WACS, FUTA has in three batches graduated Twenty-Eight (28) PhDs for Ten (10) West African Countries from 2013-2019.

The fourth batch of doctoral students of the WASCAL DRP-WACS, FUTA, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria on 15th January, 2020.  After the students’ registration exercise on Friday, 17th January 2020, academic activities commenced on Monday 20th January 2020. Lectures were proceeding well in accordance with our schedules until the obligatory closure of the centre due to the global COVID-19 crisis. Despite the interruptions, with the support of the Vice-Chancellor, we took a giant stride of launching and implementing sustainable online teaching systems. With this we were able to complete all the twenty-one (21) courses scheduled for the session in due time. This was possible through our due diligence to quality assurance with the necessary courage to attain excellence, combating every odd thrown at us by challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We successfully achieved our teaching mandate to bring all the students to a very good understanding of the concepts and science of Meteorology and Climate Science before embarking on their research work. In fact, our DRP-WACS was commended for being the first WASCAL centre to complete all the structured taught courses as well as being the first to defend doctoral research proposals at local and international levels (the Capacity Building Department of WASCAL Headquarters in Accra Ghana and the WASCAL Competence Centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) in spite of all the odds – the pandemic and the nationwide strike actions in Federal Universities.  Our students were the first to embark on field work in their respective countries and data gathering in August 2020 after the opening of national borders in Nigeria. At that time, most centres were still struggling to complete their courses and to defend their proposals.

Presently, eleven (11) doctoral students of the “Batch 4’ are at advanced stage of their data analysis and thesis writing while the new intakes for the “Batch 5” are currently undergoing the three months language study programme for students from Anglophone and Francophone countries in Republic of Benin and Ghana respectively. They are scheduled to resume for orientation programmes and lectures in FUTA by December,2021. All the West African students have benefitted from the full scholarship scheme of WASCAL.
