CIVIL ENGINEERS CHARGED ON SOLVING NIGERIA’S ENERGY CHALLENGES AT NICESA LECTURE
Civil Engineers have been charged to proffer solutions to the many challenges facing the Nigerian energy industry. The charge was given at the Annual Industry Based Lectures of the FUTA Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineering Students’ Affiliate (NICESA). Speakers at the lecture spoke extensively on the challenges and opportunities for civil engineers to create value for society by solving the myriads of societal problems in the country especially in the energy industry. The trio of Engineer Rahman Shittu,(Julius Berger) Engineer Oluwatosin Ishola(SPDC) and Engineer Tosin Adigun (Schlumberger) spoke respectively on Building Information Modelling(BIM) education, Civil Engineers in The Nigerian Industry and the importance of making use of latest technology in the industry that can facilitate their work. These latest technologies they said help to mitigate issues such as time wastage due to rework, lack of communication among various parties involved in projects, poor project delivery and management in the project life cycle.
The speakers pointed out that Nigeria is the biggest oil exporter and has the largest gas resources in Africa. The combination of both human and natural resources according to them is a clear demonstration of the country’s potential to build a prosperous economic growth that could result in poverty reduction and improved living standards. Students were charged to leverage on their engineering knowledge while broadening their skills to make informed decisions on the allocation of resources to projects.
The Head, Civil Engineering Department Professor Oluwapelumi Ojuri said the lectures are designed to educate students engineers on the task ahead of them given the increased digitization and the pressures of modern day living. He encouraged students to see the challenges in the country as an opportunity to deploy their engineering skills and add value to the society.
The President of NICESA, Mr. Eniola Oluwatobi said the lecture was based on the happenings outside the four walls of the classroom and beyond the four walls of the university and to create awareness on what Civil Engineering represents in the industrial world.
