Don Tasks Science Teachers on Innovative Teaching Methods


The Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo. Professor Abimbola Nkiko has said that science teachers must develop dynamic methods of instruction to make science more attractive and interesting to students. She stated this while delivering the key note address at the Global Breakfast Meeting organized by the Women in Chemistry, Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA Chapter.

Speaking on the topic, “Diversity in Science, Nurturing Future Scientists”, she said 21st century students have peculiar learning patterns so teachers must evolve and teach using more innovative methods. She said there must be a change in syllabus delivery to improve the learning of science. The don said teaching methods must be inclusive while students must be nurtured holistically through the introduction of science and chemical fairs. According to her, science teachers hold the key to the future of science in Nigeria.

Talking about the merits of diversity, she said the beauty of diversity and inclusion is to understand the perception of other researchers and adapt to changes and modifications where necessary. She added that diversity involves a multidisciplinary approach to scientific research and innovation. Nkiko called for more collaboration among scientists to solve more societal and environmental problems.

Declaring the meeting open, the Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji represented by the Director, Julius Okojie Central Research Laboratory, Professor Folasade Olajuyigbe said it was important to overcome barriers in gender in the sciences by promoting gender inclusion. She also said it was imperative for the Women in Chemistry to collaborate with other sister organizations for more impact and visibility. The Vice Chancellor urged them to nurture and promote enrollment for women and girls in science while not leaving the male gender behind in the quest.

On her part the Women in Chemistry FUTA Chapter Coordinator, Professor Victoria Akapanbang said the aim of the meeting was to promote gender equity and inclusion in science and guide young scientists on how to impact the society through science. She said Women in Chemistry aims to promote the study of science among the female folk and FUTA Chapter has always been at the fore front championing the hosting of the meetings.

Also the Chairman, Chemical Society of Nigeria , Professor Ishaq Amoo reiterated that collaboration is key in scientific research and applications and called for more sensitization on the importance of gender inclusion in the field of science.

The meeting was attended by staff and secondary school students in Akure.
