A team of students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA put up an impressive showing at the 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit (#NIES2024) which took place in Abuja between 26th February - 1st March, 2024. Team FUTA led by founder of the Nigeria Geosciences and Engineering Students' Community (N-GESC), Al-Amin Saheed Babatunde, a final year student of Applied Geology, ably demonstrated exceptional excellence by leading a group of 21 students from various disciplines within the Geosciences and Engineering fields at the proceedings.
The students distinguished themselves by clinching multiple prizes at the Shell, ExxonMobil and NNPC booths, thanks to the support of FUTA alumni, particularly Mr. Toyin Afolabi, CEO of the leading Paintings and Coating Manufacturer Association of Nigeria.
Furthermore, Team FUTA successfully secured internship opportunities with an energy company. At the African Rave and Award Night, the team took center stage, winning a monetary prize, a 40-inch smart television, and multiple cash prizes, with additional accolades received at the LNG Booth.
The prominence of the Team at the 7th Nigeria Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja soared after engaging in high-level networking, including visits to the State House and Banquet Hall in Aso Villa, where the team connected with ministers including Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), the OPEC Secretary General, H.E. Haitham Al-Ghais and NNPC Limited Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari.
The team leader and founder, Al-Amin Saheed Babatunde, was celebrated for his exceptional leadership and brilliance with a participation and recognition award . The recognition of the Nigeria Geosciences and Engineering Students' Community in the event magazine and exhibitor thank-you message speaks volumes, highlighting the significant contribution as the sole recognised Geosciences and Engineering Students' Association in Nigeria by the event organisers, in what is the largest summit in West Africa.
